I still have that engine and those carbs. Got about 30,000 miles on them now. Can't remember what the settings are because I haven't touched my carbs since last time I had to pass smog. I don't want to mess with anything since they've been running very well. Picking up a 1981 Vanagon tomorrow so my next quest will be learning fuel injection. Something I've been afraid of for a while.

You're still on this site?
Vanagons are pretty jumbo-cars for daily city driving. It felt like driving a bread truck around town and I was glad when it finally died. Gas mileage was terrible too.

I was in my only fender-bender in 20 years in a Vanagon because I couldn't see making a turn in heavy traffic.
Air cooled may get better mileage, not sure. I don't hate them but they do have their purposes.
What about an automatic type3 or bus? None of that auto-stick nonsense.

Couldnt find an automatic Type3, Beetle or Bus. Went with the Vanagon because it's cool and air-cooled. Plus it's orange & cream which is a wonderful color combo.

If it is in good condition, you will enjoy the driving experience.

I guess I just prefer smaller cars. Got my start with 70s GM boats, what a way to learn to drive!
I also appreciate the better craftsmanship of earlier VWs.

Was gonna buy it. Guy was a total flake. Turned out he had already taken a deposit on it and was just stringing me along in case that fell through. In the process causing me to lose my second choice, a 1980 Dasher in great shape. Now I'm looking at a 1985 Cabriolet. I'd prefer an air-cooled vw but my #1 criteria is that it's an automatic. We've all come to the conclusion that my Wife should not be anywhere near a stick shift.

Trust me, it was a hell of a job. Took him over a month of hard work.
