It is a lot of cash. Around here it's pretty hard to find one that isn't eaten up with rust.

Personally, I prefer a bug/bus/ghia in snow and ice. However, that salt is a different story.

It is a shame they still use salt on the roads, something I almost forgot living 15 years in FL.
Cars used to get rusted up bad in RI before they even hit ten years old.

They no longer use rock salt here. When snow or freezing rain is predicted they apply a slurry of some kind (not salt) to the street in advance of the weather. It works pretty good at keeping the streets clear.

In Cleveland we not only use salt, we mine it. It takes a car 10 years to rust in St. Louis? It takes a car 10 days to rust in Cleveland!

I was able to pick up a '68 for $600 which has a clean pan/ body and was from Idaho. It's 1500 engine has what I believe to be a rod bearing knock sound, but overall, the car is in good condition.

you western folks are lucky to have such solid cars. This one has peeling undercoating that reveals shiny black paint. I can still see the crayon marks under the fenders from the factory. Why such markings? I mean, it appears to be a crayon...

They use de-icer on the mountain roads here. It causes hardcore rust too, like the salt.

Well we did it. Found a '68 Standard that was very solid for a Midwest car. Needs a little work on the fundamentals and then a little beautifying. My wife said she'd like to learn how to work on this one so I'm really happy with that. Heh. I told her to get her own TS and IAC identity since women get questions answered at a 9 to 1 ratio.

Let me know if you need '68 parts as I've a collection now. I like the '68 model.

I hear people dislike this car because it was the year Heinz Heinrich Nordhoff passed away.

Nordhoff became legendary from turning the Volkswagen Beetle into a worldwide automotive phenomenon. He pioneered the idea of constant improvement - improving the car's underpinnings while keeping the styling the same. He gave liberal benefits to Volkswagen workers and increased pay scales. does your '68 have the hood latch release on the driver's side? Mine does. When did they switch it over to the glove box?

Hey thanks Ryan. Yes the latch is on the driver side. I never made the connection between Nordhoff's death and the car's year but it wouldn't have stopped me anyway.
