So I was thinking on buying a bug for a winter car and I was thinking of making into or buying a Baja bug to do this.
My plan is to find a neglected bug for cheap, resurrect it, and coat the entire bottom tray with POR15 and anything else that needs it. This won't be a show winner by any means. Just something fun to use in the winter.
I'm picking the bug because it has great heat (from what i hear) and baja bugs are just cool.
My question: Is the open engine idea for cold weather? I'm guessing not because in freezing temps that we get in Chicago it wouldn't be able to warm up. The idea of the open engine is to keep the engine cool in extreme heat. Can you make a baja bug with an enclose engine bay?

There a billion bajas out here, don't cut up another bug. Find one already converted.
I drove a beetle year round in chicago. the salt was hell but it ran well until the single digits. Then it didn't like to start.

I have driven bajas most of my idiot life. Only major issue was to cover the exhaust everynight so crap/water/snow wouldnt fall in. I dont recall a heater in my baja, it was alot of fun to drive and scary as hell when it was time to stop.
