1960 turn signal problem

Post by zabo » Tue Sep 30, 2008 6:49 pm

Having no luck getting turn signals working.

Finally got brake lights working, ordered new turn signal switch and now front turn signals work but not rear.

And then when i turn on the lights & press the brake none of the signals work.
The light on the guage just stays red and does not blink.
Any ideas?

This is tricky stuff, and I hope your original harness is intact so you can trace wire colors.

The turn signal switch has to apply power to the flasher relay which then sends a blink signal to your turn indicator filaments up front and to your brake lamp filaments in the rear. Now, we can't have the brake lamp signal cancelling out the blinkenblinks from the turn signals or nobody behind you would know which way you wanted to turn while you were slowing down. So the turn indicator switch has an additional job of interrupting the brake lamp signal to the side you are turn indicating. Hit yer wiring diagram. And be very sure that you have your double-contact bulbs correctly installed in the rear.

Thanks colin, that actually helps me understand the system a lot better.

im not sure how intact my wiring is - it looks like i have a later model headlight switch and at one time my tail lights were wired for later 63 lights.

I Also figured out the front blinkers are only being canceled out by the brakes if the brights are on...

The only diagram i can find for the 60 is black and white so thts not helping me much either.

When are you going to be back in Georgia?
