Stock Wheel Color for a 1970 Beetle

Post by 3072 » Fri Sep 26, 2008 11:55 pm

Hey there, hope someone on board can awnser this question.

I have a 1970 Beetle sedan that im restoring back to its former glory a little at a time. And am wondering what is the stock wheel color for this particular year/model.

Would anyone here know if they were the same color as the body?. Or were they painted silver??

I know that 1969 model beetles had the same body paint color for the wheels and dashboard parts (such as glovebox door and speaker grills), and VW went with black on those dash items begining in 70'.
But what im not sure about is the stock steel wheel color.

Forgot to add that the reason for not knowing what the color was, is because my beetle was given a customized non-stock respray by the PO, and the wheels was painted the same color.
And that I was wanting to go back to the original (or close) color.

Thanks

Hiya Cup,

The stock wheels on a 70 Bug would be painted Chrome Silver (L91). Quite a few folks use Argent Silver (widely available in the aftermarket - see Eastwood's for example) to repaint. I used Rustoleum Hammerite Silver. It's darker (grayer) than the original but I like the look. Besides I also use trim rings and the little of the wheel that does show looks good against the chrome of the hubcaps and trim rings.

You are correct about the driver side inserts and glovebox door being painted to match the dash. The color there is Grey-Black (L43). This is available in a spray can from Wolfsburg West.
I have cancer.

It does not have me.

Spray can "aluminum" looks very nice and authentic. Try it! :colors:

Better yet, use real high temp aluminum paint. It goes on horribly-too-bright, but immediately followed by a couple of coats of high-temp clearcoat, and the result is right-on factory Volkswagen and tough to boot...

Thanks for the tips guy's!!

If i can't find a paint store that carry's or can get the Chrome silver color when it comes time to get everything painted, I will keep the aluminum color in mind. thanks for this info! :D

One wheel will have to be replaced due to some bad rust pit "crater's" on a lower section, probably where the tire went flat and the rim was sitting next to the ground for a period of time at one point of the cars life.

Thats a beautiful bus Amskeptic!!
