Kubelwagen

Post by Bookwus » Fri Aug 15, 2008 4:28 pm

Hiya All,

So.......I'm driving in Beaverton on the Beaverton Hillsdale Highway pretty close to the Beaverton Fred Meyer and I see a tan Kubelwagen heading the opposite way.

No.......this was not a Thing (or a Safari). This was the genuine article, straight out of World War II from the wonderful folks who brought you the Blitzkreig.

Anybody in the Portland area know anything about this vehicle?

Someone was just telling me about a restored Kubel they saw recently. Did it have all the markings and such? or just tan?

Hiya dj,

Well, bear in mind that I'm tooling down the highway doing about 45 mph and this guy was headed the opposite way in fairly heavy traffic so I didn't get an optimal look for any kind of detail. I definitely would have noticed anything on the driver door (like an Afrika Corps decal) or a German cross. None to be seen.

So.....AFAIK it was just a straight tan and dark brown cloth top.

That owner has more schwartz than me to drive an original Kubel down a road with traffic. Imagine how you would feel if you got rear-ended? I'd be pulling that MP-40 out for justice! Or:

"I am so sorry sir, but my son let go of the shopping cart and it dented your funny looking car".

"Arrrggghhhh! 'Klack!'

"Sir, your funny looking squirt gun is making me nervous."

Dang, bet it's the one I spotted oh some three weeks past now. I was turning off Northbound 99E onto I-5, and it pulled up next to me heading west into the St. Johns hinterlands by the expo center there. Top down, skinny little tires and my sluggish brain's challenged little light bulb went off, "Hey, that's no Thing, that's got to be one of those Kubelwagen thingy bobbers," and my light changed.

That's about all I can contribute, but I'll keep the eyes peeled.

Sorry brother, I just needed to alude to the fact that somedays (actually, MOST days) I see the effects of "halfzeimers". I am not there yet but DAMN should my memory be THIS bad at 35?

Hey Spiffy, I'll raise you 40 yr old eyesight changes to your halfzeimers... :geek:

You guys really do have it better than we women with changes that life brings! Nothing like can't remember, can't see, fuzzy thinking and then damn, who turned up the heat round here? all at the same time. Most days I love being a woman, but every now and then I wonder if just having hair migrate south would be easier :blackeye:

Those who like the Type 181 (AKA "Thing") and like foreign films would like Secret Ballot.
