We're getting there...

I wish my back let me do more than a couple hours at a time. :(

The 1835 is bolted up.

Scared the crap out of myself... While centering the engine on that red motorcycle jack after pulling it off the stand, I managed to lose it and tip it off the jack. 3 foot fall to concrete.

Aside from some scratched paint and bent air filter, nothing seems to be the worse for the fall.

Ouch!

Ditch that craptastic air filter. You have a good excuse to do so now. Obtain a military grade Thing oil bath air cleaner or perhaps a Vanagon pick-up paper cartridge filter and housing. Do it up boss. It would go with the look.

Well, first I need to see if I can even build an engine. I didn't run it on the bench first. Mostly because of that stupid exhaust. Can't get my big drill on the pulley nut to spin the engine fast enough.

Just start it. Best way to utilize the oil pump prime is get er up to idle speed now! You have ten seconds for the light to go out or the gauge to register pressure. A drill struggling to shove new piston rings is going to be slow and just ruin the pump prime.. Now, if you ten feet of external oil cooler lines and an external oil cooler to fill, that's different.

I plan on cranking it without spark for a while to get the oil everywhere it needs to go before plugging the distributor in. There's oil in the cylinders too that need to be worked out.

I'm still sorting some stuff like alt wiring (alt is different than what was on the car), finding vacuum lines small enough for the distributor (why don't FLAPS carry 1/8" vacuum line?) etc. It's not my only car, so I get to take my time on it.

It's not on the rolls with the other hose; it's in the 'small engine' section with the lawn mower spark plugs and fuel filters. :pirate:

I'm quickly realizing how little Southern California big box auto parts stores actually carry…

Yeah, it's disturbing.

I found some at an AutoZone, but I had to take the counter monkey to the back to show him what I wanted. He kept asking what car, then he brought out some molded hose. My mind was blown.

I didn't end up needing that since the 1/8" thick wall silicone vacuum line I ordered came yesterday. I used that stuff successfully in my Saabs and am very happy with it. But can't use it for PCV connections, as I found to my detriment. hahaha. Oil breaks down the silicone. But for the carb to distributor connection, it's great.

Running . . . just in time for winter to come rolling in. Sounds good, though.

Thanks.

After I filmed that I couldn't get it started again. Drove me nuts. then I did the basics and discovered the pump wasn't pumping fuel. How it did at all in the beginning is beyond me. I had the pump mounted too high, so it was struggling. Relocated it down lower and everything was fine again. I need to find a better place, this is too close to the exhaust. But while it's in the driveway it's fine.

I did discover the alternator isn't doing anything. :( Rock Auto has Bosch for $150 so I think that's my next step. Though I still have the one on the old engine...

Put it up front under the tank. Filter too.

Much less risk of fuel on the engine, plus you'll get gravity feed and electric pumps work better pushing than pulling. Had mine there for years on my '65 because the 1776 was built from an EFI Beetle AS21 case that had no provisions for a mechanical pump. Worked just fine.
