How about this to replace the thermostat?

My bus' thermostat is shot too. Spent $100 plus sent back two old ones to the rebuilder and it only lasted 3 years. grrrrr.

Any warranty when you bought the bus thermostat? Is it the guy on theSamba making those new ones?

I do not like the MidAmerica Motorworks thermostat for the simple reason that it can fail in the closed position and it overrides the fail-safe spring.

Brand New Phosphor Bronze 2 year warranty with correct temp for your bus, needs to be modified to work, will also bolt right up for the bug:

It was a guy from the Samba. I just dug through my paperwork but couldn't find the invoice. Dang.

So will these two work for both the bus and the bug?

Here's the real McCoy: https://www.vwheritage.com/shop/1111191 ... -type4-ct/?

I think evwparts.com (in the U.S.) may also be selling those.

I see mamotorworks.com is calling that dingus they're selling both "OEM" and "Mexican". According to Antonio Trejo, a purveyor of Genuine VW parts in Mexico City, and
pretty well regarded on thesamba.com, that part was never used on any Mexican VW, and is pretty much unknown in Mexico.

Awesome Pwdercoat .com is selling remade thermostats (essentially new) for T1 AND T4 engines. They're $120ish, and they're worth it. They're warrantied, they fit, he's quick to email back, and I like them. I have one on both cars, and it's one of the few moving parts I carried over to my new engine.

Ooh and I want to make sure we're not confusing engine thermostats with the thermostatically controlled deck lid vents, right?

Haven't even explored the lid vent thing. Didn't even know I had one. :)
