Re: Beetle Shift Points
Excellent! Now, how about similar guidance for us "lazy folk" with the Automatic Stickshift ?

Ha haaa! Caught my fish. Here's what you do, Lazy Man.vwlover77 wrote:Excellent! Now, how about similar guidance for us "lazy folk" with the Automatic Stickshift ?
You tell me what year your car is. (71?)(1600AE?)
You find your owner's manual. I know you have it.
You tell me what your rear axle and gear ratios are, they're in there.
You tell me your tire size.
I give you shift points.

Re: Beetle Shift Points
From the '71 Beetle owner's manual:
Looks like 'L' is the manual transmission's 2nd gear, '1' is manual's 3rd gear, and '2' is manual's 4th gear.

Re: Beetle Shift Points
Now we need to add the torque converter's multiplication ratio. It is a variable multiplier that drops down as the turbine comes up to the pump's speed.sped372 wrote:From the '71 Beetle owner's manual:

Re: Beetle Shift Points
Correct. I was just surmising that they "reused" existing gears instead of specially designing new ones for the autostick application. Makes sense to have fewer unique components across the entire product line. I could be wrong though.Amskeptic wrote:Now we need to add the torque converter's multiplication ratio. Re: Beetle Shift Points
Now I know I can safety drive all day long in my 70' Ghia convertible at 81 mph although its ungodly loud at the speed with wind/enginenoise so 70 mph is it...
Yep, still has all the stock sound insulation and is a really plain stock/time-capsule at 122K.
