Why is his focus so strongly on oil? I agree it's important, but our nation is on a not-so-merry ride. Lots of big fish in the pot.

Well, Hammy, we are so reliant on oil/gas that it is pushing the price of everything up...which isn't going to help with any sort of economic recovery.

Pull our military out of the world's ass, spend the money on US mfg. and alternative fuel development. It's pretty obvious. Billions of $$$$.....trillions even.

Think about how many problems this would solve. And we'd feel proud to be Americans, really truly. Give everybody a stake in their own future.
Chicago Northwestern Railway changed their logo in the 70's from "Railway" to "Employee Owned", they were obviously quite proud of it.
I mean seriously, it's time to stop treating the rest of the world like our personal sweat shop for disposable goods.
Withdrawal from the teat is briefly painful, then liberating.

Wait a few months until people get a load of the oil company profits for this quarter.

Yep, and yep, and yes, and yes, it makes sense, it is logical, and, then, why is it not done? Can we really be so much smarter than those in power? Yes, yes, we are, well, maybe not, maybe there agenda isn't what we would think it should be.

I think it's more of an overlap. The agenda of those in power doesn't always coincide with the people. If they are far enough apart, you get the 60s; if they are close enough together you get Roosevelt elected for 4 terms.

One problem with this issue is that we elect the president to make tough choices; no matter which we you go on some things (most things? all things?) someone gets screwed. Making that choice isn't always easy, but it has to be done. At the same time, I don't think many people today would disagree if you said that the gov't agenda is dominated by the views of the wealthy, corporations and well-funded groups like the NRA or MoveOn. These groups operate on their own self-interest, rather than what's best for the greater good, and let's face it, THAT influence on gov't is bad. Or at least manipulative.

Best,

L.

this will result in a report a few months or years from now, telling us all that it is all legal under our financial system rules and regulations. It will be explained that the reasons the cost of energy, derived from oil, rose so sharply is because of the instability in Africa and the Mid East, caused by the peoples revolutions. Gives ya a better understanding of who gets western support and who doesn't, regimes that work for stability vs regimes that are so repressive that leaders like Mubarak are tolerable.

It's more about the campaigner in chief building momentum, making people feel good that he's watchin out for us.

Bolivia enacted law giving planet Earth the same legal rights as an individual person today.

Planet Earth will be unable to contribute cash to any political campaign.

Why bother.

Earth holds the certainty of what will be and executes an appropriate response.

Busy slate for planet Earth, thus, given this gift of living with Earth, it's up to us to do our best to honor and realize the highest ideals of the possibilities that were given us. Stewardship and connection rather than extraction and exploitation.

Happy slightly late Earth Day.

Or, at the very least, sustainable exploitation. What's going on now is gonna collapse in a heap on all of us soon.
