big news in Suriname

Post by Bleyseng » Fri Jan 21, 2011 3:37 am

Price of gas went up 1SRD yesterday....in part because of a .50 tax increase and a adjustment due to the price of oil going up. That works out to $4.63 USD for a gallon of gas....The new government also devalued the Surinamese dollar from 2.80 to 3.35 to one USD...So US and Euro imports just went up in price...but made the banana exports cheaper.

So what's the price of gas now in your city?

Ours is about $3.00 a gallon for 87.

Interesting development, Bleyseng. I read somewhere else recently that the price of bananas was going to go up because of some banana disease that was affecting production. Could it be that devaluing the Suriname currency was an attempt to mitigate this?

In other words, counteract the rise in market price of bananas with a local currency devaluation, thereby offloading the fruit producers' problems onto the Surinamese people. Hmm. Conspiracy theories....

Nah, I talked to a government insider and it was caused by the Government Unions having a huge increase due them. The new Government couldn't talk em out of it so the raise so they devalued the money here....so they got their raise but you can't buy as much.

General strike yesterday by the bus drivers til noon so the city was frozen solid. Rumor has it that the price of gas will go up another 1SRD...This is what the present President did when he was dictator in the 90's..He has no clue how to run a country other than to tax and raise more taxes to spend on his cronies....

About $3.15 in Portland. Mom said it's almost $4 for premium in L.A.

Glad to hear we can commiserate with the people of Suriname (at least far far as our governments being bought is concerned).

I paid $2.89 last week, J paid $2.92 today. At 6:13pm CST, it's now 66* F. Our mornings have hovered around 40* which isn't bad at all.

About 3.50 per gallon in Chitown, it varies 20 or 30 cents per gallon one way or the other.
